hey there my name is Mike Montgomery andtoday I’m gonna show you how to remodela bathroom on modern builds I want togive a huge thanks to this video sponsorHome Depot this whole renovation wouldnot be possible without them andthroughout the video of see me usingsome amazing products from Home Depotlike the customizable Delta up style tuband shower surround and bath and showerfixtures from Delta’s pivotal bathcollection if you’re interested infinding more about them you can followthe link down in the description thereI’ve also written a blog post with moreabout this renovation in general remodel projects are totallyintimidating I get it but bathrooms arenot that tough mainly because the layoutis totally what it needs to be the sinkis going to be where it is and theshower is going to stay where it isthings just need updated so stay tunedand let’s get building or let’s getdemoing because the first thing we’regonna do is tear this place apartdemoing out this bathroom was relativelyquick I started by taking out the vanitysmooth this thing was not too sturdy andit came out really quick from there Icould take out the cabinet above thetoilet the mirror and then the toiletitself this was definitely not thefunnest part taking a shower like thisout is gonna be

different for everybodyso make sure and do your own researchmost fiberglass shower inserts areinstalled the same way which means theycan be demoed out the same as well afterremoving all the knobs and fixturesI used a utility knife to remove thedrywall about two to four inches abovethe shower itself this exposes a flangethat is typically used to screw or nailthe shower insert to the studs behind it now that the drain was out and there wasnothing holding the insert down it wastime to remove the whole thing and to dothat I used a six inch reciprocating sawblade to cut the insert into pieces thisis gonna allow me to remove this insertin pieces otherwise I wouldn’t be ableto get it through the door of thebathroom whenever you’re cutting througha shower insert like this make sure thatyou’re not cutting through anyelectrical wires or plumbing behind yourwall at this point in the project everythingwas removed from the bathroom except forthe floors that is so I rented thisdemolition hammer from Home Depot alongwith a chisel bit so that I could removethe porcelain tiles whoever installedthe

tiles in this house originally did areally good job because it was not easyto get these up and once the tiles wereremovedI used the bit itself to scrape away anymortar that was still stuck to theconcrete popcorn ceilings are reallyugly but luckily they’re really easy toremove the first thing you want to do isspray the ceiling to help control thedust this also helps the texture removea little bit easier I recommend using ascraper like mine which a trash bag canattach to this helps the cleanup processgo by way quicker we couldn’t be happyto report that all major demo iscomplete it’s nothing to put this placeback together and the first thing I’mgonna do is level out these floors ifyou’ll notice under where the tub goesthe floor is not quite level see how thefoundation is raised in the center soI’m going to float an entire new flooracross this bathroom this is gonna makethe tiling and tub installation wayeasier before I floated a new floor Icalled around the perimeter of the roomto help seal everything up once that hadtime to set I mixed up some selfleveling underlayment you want to makesure and mix this so that it’s

reallyrunny that way it can flow into anywherethere’s low spots in the floor thanks togravity the mix and naturally flows tothe low spot in the floor but it doesn’thurt spreading it out a little bit after I floated the floor I let it setfor about two days to cure then I cameback and I roughed in all of my plumbingfor the tub drain installing a tubreally is simple but you want to makesure that it’s perfectly level beforeyou screw it into the studs behind itoftentimes rough framing is just thatrough and inconsistent so make sure andhave a pack of shims with you so thatyou can have good contact everywhereyou’re screwing your tub to the studsbehind it after the tub and drain wereinstalled I called a plumber to do theroughen for the shower Plumbing is notsomething that I have a ton ofexperience in and this is something thatI wanted to make sure was done correctlyafter the valve was installed here andPEX tubing from the valve to the hot andcold lines as well as to a showerhead uptop and while we were at it we wentahead and raised the showerhead about afoot and a half from where it waspreviously after i test-fit the showerwalls i measured and marked the locationof the valve and the downspout for thetub so that i could drill holes in thatwall insert for the plumbing to gothrough and anywhere I was drilling Imade sure to use painters tape to keepthe shower wall from getting scratched once the holes were drilled I could putthat third wall in place and check thefit thankfully it worked out great onthe first try after that I grabbed myportable miter saw station so that Icould cut some 1 by fours as the supportpieces behind the

shower wall itself Ihave a build video showing how to makethis portable miter saw station ifyou’re interested in checking it outthere’ll be a link in the description aswell as a card in the corner of thescreen these 1 by fours that I’minstalling are the support behind theshower walls once again I made sure tokeep some shims with me so that I couldmake good level walls for reference theshower inserts are held to the 1 byfours with a polymer adhesive andthere’s multiple recommended in theinstallation guide supplied by themanufacturer just like with the tub youwant to make sure that each of theseshower walls are really plumb and levelbefore you screw the flange down to the2x4 studs this way your edges areconsistent all the way across yourshower from the tub to the shower walls this blue drywall is water resistantwhich means it’s perfect for thisapplication I use the utility knife tocut panels to replace the drywall Iremoved earlierthis is my first time doing drywall aswell and I’ve got to say it is not astough as you would think so don’t beintimidated by this process you’vetotally got itthe only challenging part was trimmingaround the shower if I had known

thatthis would have been an issue sooner Iwould have made sure to make straightercuts on the original drywall so thatthis process would be easierregardless once your drywall is in placeyou want to tape and mud your seams you use drywall compound to fill any voidsand to smooth out the transition betweenthe original drywall and the new piecesthat we put in this helps hide any seamsand makes a really nice flat wall italso makes the corners a lot cleaner Ilearned on this project that it’s betterto do multiple thin coats of compoundrather than one or two really thickcoats that way you save a lot of timesanding and you make a lot less of amess you typically want to let this setfor about 24 hours or at least overnightthen you can come back and sand yourseams and apply a second third or fourthcoat as necessary right now I’m here at my local HomeDepot to rent a tile saw I picked upsome really awesome black mosaic tileswith a hexagonal pattern only problem isI need a tile cell with a sliding tableto be able to cut them cleanly that’swhat’s really awesome about Home Depotin their rental service I’m able to geta really high-quality saw at a reallylow fee in fact I’m

only gonna rent itfor four hours and that should give meplenty of time to tile this shower andget it back here in time that’s what’sso awesome about this Delta up style tuband shower surround is that you cancustomize it with literally any tilethat you want I started by taking mytwelve by twelve tile squares andcutting them so that they fit the insertof the shower instead of a thin setmortar I used the same polymer adhesivethat I use to attach the shower walls tothe 1 by fours behind it after applyingthe adhesive I used a trowel to spreadit out that way each of the tile hadplenty of contact with the shower walland the adhesive I put them in placemaking sure not to press on them toohard so that they didn’t sink too deeplyinto the adhesive then I used tilespacers to make sure that all of myspacing and gaps were consistent acrossthe stretch once I had a couple of thesein place and got the hang of it I wasable to tile the rest of the showerreally quickly I have links to the Deltaup style shower kit that I used ifyou’re interested in learning more Ireally couldn’t recommend it more I wasreally impressed with the quality of theshower itself and the ability tocustomize it the way that you can isreally amazing this was my first time applying grout totile so I’m sure I was messier than Ineeded the bead but it came out lookingreally niceI used my grout float to work that groutinto the cracks between all of the tilesyou don’t want any voids here after thatI used a sponge and water to clean upthe majority of that grout then a papertowel to wipe it all clean and lastly to waterproof this shower andtub I caught all of the seams with

thesame a polymer adhesive I used on therest of the shower look at that so coolI had to remove the light fixtures topaint so the first thing I did once itwas dry was replace it so that I couldfilm with some light again I replacedthe vanity light along with the bath fanso that everything matched and was cleanand white I’m gonna be installing 12 inch by 24inch porcelain marble floors and justlike before this is the first time I’mtiling a floor as well so I made sureand followed the manufacturersdirections on each of the productswhenever I used them I applied my mortarwith a half inch by half inch trowel andI also did what’s called back butteringthe tiles before I installed them thisjust means that I installed a thin layerof thin set to the back of the tilebefore I put it down on top of themortar I took some extra time to makesure this first tile was really levelbecause that’s what all of the rest ofthe tiles will reference from here onout I just worked my way down the wallcutting pieces as I needed to usingspacers to maintain a consistent groutline I also decided to stagger my groutlines so that it had a nice clean look titling that floor got a little bitmessy there towards the end but it cameout really really niceI made sure I’ve got nice spacers sothat I could

help keep a reallyconsistent grout line across all of mytiles before I could grout the tiles Ineeded to remove the excess mortarbetween the tiles I used these more toremoving attachments for my 18 voltRyobi multi-tool to clean up the gapsbetween the tiles like I said I was alittle messier than I should have beenhere as I worked I kept a shop vac withme so that I could remove that dust andsee if there was any extra mortar Ineeded to remove then I got my grout andmy grout float back out and I groundedbetween the tiles this time I was not asmessy as I was in the shower and I wasable to clean everything up reallyeasily and now that the grout has had acouple of days to dry this bathroom isgoing to start moving along reallyquickly the bathroom had some old dingyoutlets and switches so I decided toremove all of those and replace themwith some modern square ones and justlike I’m not a plumber I am NOT anelectrician so don’t look for me foradvice in that department this one byfor trim that I’m using for the bathroomis perfectly suited for it it’s PVCwhich means it’s waterproof in some ofmy previous renovation videos you’veseen me make one by four trim out of MDFinstalling this is the exact same methodyou want to make sure that you have areally tight seam between your trim andyour wall for a clean flush look and itcustomize this piece of the door trim towork around the baseboard but aside fromthat it’s the same as trimming out anyother door

toilets are super easy to install onceyou get a new wax ring on there all youhave to do is set your toilet in placemake sure that it’s dead level thenassemble according to yourmanufacturer’s directions this bathroom vanity from Kohler isreally awesome because it’s modular themain cabinet at the vanity assembles andinstalls just like you would expect onceyou get it in place make sure it’scentered to the wall where you want itas well as level to the floor then graba screw gun and a shim pack and attachit to the 2×4 studs behind the wall fromthere you have the option to addadditional cabinets on either side ofthe vanity for extra storagethis way you can customize the vanity tofit your space and maximize storage now I know I said I’m not much of aplumber but I’m definitely confidentenough to install a faucet this model isfrom the Delta pivotal series same asthe shower kit that you’ll see later onboth of those will be linked in thedescription I really

love the way theylook the shower arm that comes with thepivotal shower kit is really long whichallows it to act as a rainfallshowerhead even though is a traditionalshower roughen and once I had thatinstalled the bathroom was done nowbefore I show you what this bathroomended up looking like I want to remindyou just how dingy and out-of-dateeverything was the lighting was bad thefixtures were out-of-date and everythingwas just sort of well falling apartbut now we have a fresh clean modernbathroom that’s gonna be stylish foryears to come not only is it 10 timesmore functional but it just looks andfeels way better when you’re in there Iknow some people criticize using a lotof white finishes they say it’s toosterile but if you ask me

there’snowhere else I would want to feelsterile than a bathroom am i right so thanks a lot for watching I reallyappreciate it if you’re interested infinding out more about the home depotproducts i used and more aboutrenovating a bathroom in general makesure and follow the link down in thedescription i want to give one more hugethanks to home depot for sponsoring thisvideo this absolutely would not havebeen possible without them I won’t likeHome Depot is my dream sponsor Icouldn’t be more proud or appreciativeto have them on board if you’ve got anyquestions about this project you canalways leave me a comment down in thedescription or you can hit me up with aDM on Instagram I am at modern buildsfinally don’t forget to hit thatsubscribe button down below me and thatnotification bell that way you knowevery time I post a new project videothis has been an incredible learningexperience for me and don’t forgetthere’s modern builds merchlink for that is down in the descriptionas well bye everybody
